Born in Genoa, Francesco Carbone emigrated from Italy to the US, where he graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.  While a student, he roomed with artist John Wilson, establishing a lifelong friendship.  He went on to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, as well as the Barnes Foundation in Pennsylvania.  In Boston, Carbone was a member of a group of artists known as the Direct Vision Group, which was begun in 1971, with Jason Berger and Marilyn Powers.  Their “vision” reflected their respect for the plein aire painters of France.  Carbone was a professor for 28 years at the Museum School in Boston.  He exhibited widely in the Boston area and elsewhere, including in Italy.
