NB. J.J. Enneking was one of the most respected and admired landscape painters in New England during the end of the nineteenth century and the first years of the twentieth. His deep respect for the landscape led to his election as a Park Commissioner in the city of Boston. Enneking’s early studies were in Paris and Munich, as well as with Samuel Lancaster Gerry in Boston. After a long recuperation from severe injuries incurred while serving in the Civil War, he returned and settled in Boston in 1868. Highly influenced by his travels in France, where he observed artists of the Barbizon School and Impressionism, he became quite successful, both artistically and financially. In the 1880s, he began to paint landscapes in the White Mountains and in Maine. He exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions, including at the Boston Art Club, National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Paris Expo, Art Institute of Chicago, Corcoran Gallery, and several solo shows at Vose Galleries in Boston. He was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Boston Guild of Artists.
