Carl Wuermer immigrated to Chicago from his native Germany at the age of fifteen. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, before moving to New York to attend the Art Students League. Wuermer was a member of Grand Central Art Galleries, Allied Artists of America, Connecticut Academy of Fine Art, Woodstock Art Association, Springfield Art League, and the Illinois Academy of Fine Art. He exhibited extensively and won many prizes and medals, at such venues as the Society of Independent Artists, Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, National Academy of Design, Grand Central Art Galleries, Corcoran Gallery biennials, and Allied Artists of America. He was awarded the J. Francis Murphy Memorial Prize from the National Academy of Design in 1928. Working primarily in oils, Wuermer painted in a distinct style which reflected that of French Pointillism but with a more precise approach. His work has been acquired by institutions including the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Amherst College, IBM Corporate Art Collections, and the Syracuse University Art Collection.
