Born in Germany, Ernest Fiene emigrated to the States in 1912. A member of the National Academy of Design and the Arts Students League, he studied at both schools (with Leon Kroll at the NAD), as well as in France, Germany, and Italy. By 1920, he was a part time resident of Woodstock, New York, becoming a part of that growing artistic community. He exhibited extensively, at venues including the Society of Independent Artists, Salons of America, Whitney Museum of American Art, Carnegie Institute, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Beginning in 1933, Fiene spent summers painting on Monhegan Island in Maine. He also painted in the summer colonies of Ogunquit, Maine and Provincetown, Massachusetts. He was represented by prestigious galleries including the Downtown Gallery and Midtown Galleries, both in New York, and his work is included in many public collections.
