Born in Australia, Martin Lewis emigrated to San Francisco in 1900, later spending two years in Japan to study traditional printmaking techniques. Highly regarded for his exquisite technical skills and noir-like atmosphere, his views of New York City have been acquired by numerous major museums, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Art Institute of Chicago, LA County Museum of Art, and many more. Lewis’ night views of the City used light and shadow to underscore the mood, along with figures and architectural structures, to enhance the atmospheric tone of his studies.
